Position Details

Assistant Teacher I will support the teachers who serve a varied population of students with typical and neuro-diverse abilities in the Integrated Early Learning Center. The incumbent assists with the implementation of the program as outlined and with adapting instruction that meets the individual academic, medical, developmental, and technological needs of the students.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Assist supervising teacher with the implementation of instruction and evaluation aspects of the classroom in accordance with students’ individualized plans using effective strategies for academic and behavioral success.
  2. Complete instructional-related duties as assigned by supervising teacher and administrators.
  3. Provide instruction, supervision, and classroom management under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  4. Implement behavioral protocols and assignments for students during instructional and non-instructional times.
  5. Utilize instructional and non-instructional time in a professional manner in keeping with administrative guidelines.
  6. Participate in and contribute to in-service training and staff meetings.
  7. Provide support and leadership for curricular and extra-curricular activities that support student-life and promote a positive school experience.
  8. Assist with the implementation of technology in instructional design and delivery in accordance with supervising teacher’s directions.

*The individual will demonstrate the ability to appropriately aid the needs of children and adolescents with or without a developmental disability and their families. The individual will be able to address the needs of certain specific adults with disabilities on a case-by-case basis as determined by the physicians.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be able to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
  2. Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make the discriminations in sound.
  3. Must have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of the work assigned.
  4. Must be able to sit at a computer terminal for extended periods.
  5. Must be able to travel to and from different locations and sites in the greater Baltimore
  6. Must have manual dexterity sufficient to perform various keyboard functions.
  7. Must be physically present at the assigned job site.
  8. Must be able to lift and carry students requiring assistive and/or adaptive equipment.
  9. Must be able to lift/carry/restrain students as needed to implement approved behavioral management techniques.
  10. Must be able to maintain a calm demeanor throughout daily interactions with students and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

None.

EDUCATION:

Associate’s degree or completion of two years of college equivalence required.

 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience working in a classroom of students with disabilities.
  • Experience with pediatric population preferred

 

RELATED TRAINING:

Must possess and maintain cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Must be able to accept constructive feedback.
  • Must be able to organize and manage time and manage multiple tasks.
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective communications and working relationships with other employees, patients, and their families as well as the general public, across all age groups, including but not limited to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, and adult populations.
  • Ability to demonstrate professional behavior by adhering to departmental and organizational policies and procedures, and assuming authority appropriately.
  • Must maintain adequate personal grooming consistent with professional appearance.
